Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits his side's ill-fated UEFA Champions League campaign was just 'not good enough' after they were beaten (again) 2-1 by Fiorentina at Anfield on Wednesday evening.
Rafa Benitez's men were already condemned to the obscurity of the Europa League prior to the match having suffered costly defeats at home to Lyon and away to La Viola earlier in the campaign.
And their misery was compounded when a 92nd minute winner from Alberto Gilardino condemned them to back-to-back European home defeats for the first time in their illustrious history.
Yossi Benayoun looked to have lifted the gloom surrounding the club by giving his side the lead with a glancing header from a Gerrard free-kick in the first-half, before Martin Jorgensen levelled things up with a sweet strike.
The result means that the Reds have now just won three out of their last 14 games in all competitions and despite all the talk form Benitez and Co. that they will turn their season around, they have yet to walk the walk.
From the outside it is clear Liverpool are just not playing well, no rhythm or cohesion, and they are certainly weaker than last season without Xabi Alonso keeping them ticking over in the engine room.
The club's talisman Gerrard was forthright in his analysis of the Reds' performance during the campaign, but again trotted out the same hard luck story that quite frankly fans must be getting fed up of now. "If you look at the whole campaign, it was not good enough from our point of view but now we need to try to qualify for the same competition next year," he told Sky Sports 2.
"It wasn't our strongest team but we gave a good account of ourselves. We were a bit unlucky to lose in the end.
"There was not much in it as far as points were concerned. It was just about getting this game out of the way and trying to get good preparation for the game against Arsenal on Sunday."
