Under-fire Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara has lamented his side's devastating exit from the UEFA Champions League and admitted that he has no excuses for such a poor performance.
Juve were humiliated on Tuesday evening as they were thrashed by 4-1 by Bayern Munich at the Stadio Olimpico di Turin to become the second major team to exit this season’s UEFA Champions League at the very first hurdle.
Needing only a draw to progress and having gone 1-0 up thanks to David Trezeguet, the Bianconeri capitulated as a penalty by Hans-Jorg Butt and further goals by Ivica Olic, Mario Gomez, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk sealed a historic win for Bayern and sent through to the last 16.
Juve will have to make do with the Europa League as scant consolation and in the wake of some excoriating criticisms, Ferrara took his hat off to the Bavarians before admitting that he has no excuses for such a poor showing from his men.
"I am very disappointed for the club, team and fans. Going out of the Champions League hurts," he told Sky Sports Italia.
"We got zero points in our last two games. We are not able to manage a situation, we were not able to to anything."
"Bayern were superior to us on every level. We created very little.
"It's difficult to say what went wrong. We cannot find excuses. This is a competition where you need to be motivated," he added ruefully.
