Southampton legend Matthew Le Tissier has put himself forward to give England players specialist penalty taking coaching in an attempt to avoid further spot-kick heartbreak at the World Cup 2010.
The issue of the Three Lions' penalty taking ineptitude in tournaments has come back around following Frank Lampard and Jermaine Defoe's high profile spot-kick misses in Premier league matches over the weekend.
England have crashed out of World Cups when it has gone done to penalties in 1990, 1998 and 2006, and similarly lost out in European Championships in 1996 and 2004, winning just one shoot-out along the way (Spain in Euro 96).
And it is perhaps a mite surprising to learn that despite a painstakingly particular procedure in every other part of England's World Cup preparations, Fabio Capello and his assistants have not employed a specialist to help with penalties.
Le Tissier reckons he can be that man, and he certainly has the record to back up his claims having scored 47 of 48 penalties he took throughout his career, generally preferring placement over power.
Time and time again 'Le God' had goalkeepers hopelessly diving the wrong way, and the former Southampton striker thinks he could solve the Three Lions shoot-out woes with just a little bit of simple psychology. "I'm surprised actually, with the way that football has gone, the number of staff clubs have and they say they never leave any stone unturned, I can't think of any club ever that has employed a penalty coach," he said, according to The Guardian. "I'd hope that the players would be able to take it on board and have enough bottle to keep their head cool in the situation and not be afraid to change their mind at the last minute if they have to."
The first 40 seconds of this compilation demonstrates Le Tisser's reliability from the spot perfectly:
