ExtraFootie looks ahead to the 'Game of the Weekend' in Ligue 1 this weekend as in-form Olympique Marseille travel to the Stade Felix-Bollaert to face RC Lens.
After a slow start to life as new Marseille boss, Didier Deschamps finally appears to have finally got the ball rolling as he looks to guide l'OM to their first major honour in 16 years.
Having secured a narrow 1-0 victory in last Friday's 'La Classique' at home to bitter northern rivals Paris St Germain, Deschamps' men then outplayed AC Milan in midweek, but only managed a 1-1 draw in their Group C UEFA Champions League clash.
Although the point may not prove sufficient for Les Phocéens to become the third French club to reach the last 16 in the competition, the performance confirmed that Marseille are beginning to hit top-form at the right time.
Having netted 14 goals in their last five matches in all competitions, l'OM now travel to the intimidating Stade Felix-Bollaert to face newly promoted Lens.
Les Sang et Or boast one of Ligue 1's most passionate following with an average gate of close to 35,000, and coach Jean-Guy Wallemme will be hoping that his men will ride the momentum of support as they seek to throw a spanner in Marseille's championship-seeking train.
Two consecutive wins against AS Nancy (2-1) and away to Sochaux (2-1) did much to alleviate the pressure off the 42-year-old coach, and should he lead his charges to a somewhat unforeseen victory over seventh placed l'OM, then he may already be thinking about another season in the top-flight.
Marseille themselves cannot afford to lose tabs with surprise leaders Auxerre, but more importantly champions Bordeaux and former champions Lyon who they trial by three points.
Behind sixth place Valenciennes, l'OM are Ligue 1's top scorers this season with 23 goals in 12 matches, and 'DD' will be hoping that the likes of Brandao, captain Mamadou Niang, and the ever-impressive Fabrice Abriel can continue delivering as the Southern-giants plan a pre-Christmas surge.
In front of their adoring fans Lens will prove tough opposition. Marseille you have been warned!
