Lehmann: Rangers not good enough for Champions League

VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has given a damning assessment of Scottish giants Rangers - and insists they are simply not good enough to play in the UEFA Champions League.

Markus Babbel's Bundesliga strugglers knocked the Gers out of Europe on Tuesday evening after a comfortable 2-0 win at Ibrox courtesy of goals either side of half-time from Sebastian Rudy and Zdravko Kuzmanovic.

The defeat means that Walter Smith's side have lost all three home games, conceding 10 and scoring just twice in the process, in a dismal UEFA Champions League campaign this season.

Their misery was compounded by the fact they will finish bottom of Group G and miss out on the consolation of a Europa League place despite still having to face Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Matchday 6.

"Rangers don't have the quality of a Champions League member any more,"
Lehmann told the Daily Record.

"That became obvious in those past 90 minutes. I can recall times when opponents were awestruck and scared to play here but those days are gone and Rangers are not the fierce opponents they used to be.

"We could have won by an even wider margin. In fact Rangers only had one real scoring opportunity in the whole 90 minutes."

Whilst there can be no doubting that the heady days of Rangers or Old Firm rivals Celtic competing for major honours on the continent are long gone for now, the criticism from Lehmann does seem a bit rich.

He mentions that the Gers do not possess the 'quality' to compete in Europe's elite club competition, yet the same could be said for his side, who are currently in the bottom three in the Bundesliga and headed into the game having failed to win in 10 games!

So Jens, jog on!

Rangers are not even good enough for the Premier League and would even struggle in the Championship, as would Celtic. Let's hope we continue to refuse them entry into our league because to allow them to would be a disaster.

Although Lehmann's musings are true, Rangers have been APPALLING - its a bit rich coming from a Stuttgart player

Last time I checked Stuttgart were in the bottom three - lost 6, Drew 5 and won only 2 matches with a goal difference of minus 5.

Besides at least Rangers are champions albeit in a terribly weak league

But still Lehmann has a point - its actually pitiful watching Rangers - sigh - truly abysmal
