Liverpool No.1 Pepe Reina is targeting Europa League success after the Reds were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Despite securing a 1-0 win over Hungarian champions Debrecen, Fiorentina's victory over Lyon by the same scoreline at the Stadio Artemio Franchi meant that the Reds can no longer qualify for the last 16.

Participation in the Europa League is scant consolation for most Kop fans, however, Reina has targeted success in Europe's secondary cup competition and hopes that it can make up for their disastrous UEFA Champions League showing.

"Of course we're disappointed because this is a big competition that we've done well in for the last three or four years," he told the club's official website.

"Now we're out, though. It's a tough competition and it's not always possible to get out of the group stage.

"The Europa League is another competition for us and we want to win it. It also has strong teams and it will be nice to play in it. It's already become a target," he revealed.

With the likes of Benfica, Shahktar Donetsk, Werder Bremen and AS Roma strutting their stuff in this season's Europa League, Reina acknowledged that the Reds will need to be at their best should they lift the trophy come May.

"It'll be tough because there are so many good teams involved, but we have to look forward and keep trying to win," he stressed.

The Reds travel to Goodison Park on Sunday to face Everton in a mouth-watering Merseyside derby, and Reina knows that a win will go a long towards helping the club to ensure a top four spot.

"To beat Everton is always huge, especially for the fans," he said.

"We'll be trying because we also need to win in the league and in the race for fourth place. We have to move on and keep fighting."
