Matchday 5 in the UEFA Champions League gets underway in Group A with already-qualified Bordeaux hosting Juventus, whilst crisis hit Bayern Munich entertain Maccabi Haifa at the Allianz Arena.
One of the most intriguing groups in this season’s UEFA Champions League has already produced a shock as Bordeaux’s safe passage into the knock-out stages means that one of Europe's elite clubs will be eliminated at the first hurdle.
That dreaded honour will fall on either Juventus or Bayern Munich, both of whom chase the second automatic qualifying spot alongside the French champions.
Laurent Blanc's men secured their place in the last 16 for the first time in their history with a fine 2-0 win over Bayern Munich at the Allainz Arena last time out with Yoann Gourcuff and Marouane Chamakh getting the goals.
The result confirmed Les Girondins credentials as 'under-dogs' and have left both the Bavarians and the Bianconeri, who between them have lifted six European Cups, somewhat scratching their heads.
Bordeaux lead the way with 10 points, two ahead of Juventus who have eight, whilst Louis Van Gaal's stuttering Bayern Munich have just four points.
With the top two set to meet at the Stade Chaban Delmas, Van Gaal will know that victory over the groups whipping boys Maccabi Haifa is imperative, should - and it's a big should - Bordeaux overcome Ciro Ferrara's men.
After already being held 1-1 by Bordeaux in Turin, Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro has stressed the need to go for the victory as the Old Lady seek to book their place into the last 16, thus making Bayern result at home to Maccabi irrelevant.
"We want to win so we can get qualification out of the way really quickly, but it will not be easy," he told a press conference.
It all points to an intriguing night which could go a long way to deciding who joins Bordeaux in the last 16.
