ExtraFootie's 'Game of the Night' in the UEFA Champions League takes place in Group F as holders Barcelona host Inter Milan at the Camp Nou with qualification and elimination on the line!
Tuesday night's potentially apocalyptic showdown at the Camp Nou between Barcelona and Jose Mourinho's Inter means that one of Europe's elite could be eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the first hurdle.
In reality it was always going to come down to this - Barcelona v Inter Milan, Matchday 5, however, the penultimate game of the group stage was supposed to be a simple squabble between who claimed top spot.
Alas, it is anything but. Courtesy of the Nerazzurri’s last gasp 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev in Matchday 4, Jose Mourinho's men currently top a tight group with six points.
Rubin Kazan and Barcelona are joint second on five points, although, by virtue of a better head-to-head record, the Russians are effectively ahead of La Blaugrana.
Propping up the table on four points are Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kiev who travel to Tatarstan to play Rubin Kazan in the early kick-off.
A win for Serie A champions Inter, coupled with victory for the Russian champions Rubin Kazan, would see the Catalans become the first ever holders to be eliminated at the first hurdle.
Incentive enough for the self-proclaimed 'Special One', who perhaps has some unfinished business with Barca from his days as Chelsea chief.
Throw in the fact that striker Samuel Eto'o is returning to the club where he spent a glorious five seasons with, as well as Barca's stuttering form of late, and you'd be tempted to back the Serie A table-toppers, who, just four weeks ago sat bottom of the group and winless in over a year.
Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is calling for his team-mates to step-up to the plate and banish any idea of an early elimination. "Inter are a very good team and this is a vital match in which we have no margin for error," the Swede told FIFA.com.
"If we win then we’ll take charge of the group. So far we’ve had a lot of bad luck in our Champions League games.
"It’s a very big game for me and I’m in an optimistic mood, I believe that it will turn out the way I want. It’s a very important game. Not just for us, but for the club, the supporters, even for the neutrals and the world at large."
Team News:
Barcelona could be without star man Lionel Messi after he picked up a thigh injury against Athletic Bilbao at the weekend.
Midfielder Yaya Toure and full-back Eric Abidal will both miss out after picking up swine flu, whilst Rafael Marquez has only just recovered from the H1N1 virus.
New signing Dmytro Chygrynskiy is ineligible, whilst Irish heart-breaker Thierry Henry is set to start.
Inter Milan welcome back midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who picked up a knock whilst on international duty with Holland last week which kept him out of Saturday's 3-1 win over Bologna.
Ex-Barca striker Samuel Eto'o faces his former club as Jose Mourinho hopes to deliver a knock-out blow to the Spanish and European champions.
Probable Line-Up (*Star Man):
Barcelona (4-3-3): Valdes; Alves, Puyol, Pique, Maxwell; Busquets, Keita, Xavi; Iniesta, Ibrahimovic, Henry
Inter Milan (4-3-1-2): Julio Cesar; Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu; Zanetti, Stankovic, Cambiasso; Sneijder; Eto'o, Milito.
ExtraFootie Prediction: Barcelona 2 - 2 Inter Milan. It is easy to forget that prior to their last-gasp 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev in Matchday 4, the Nerazzurri had not won a UEFA Champions League game in over a year, but the win gave the team impetus and with Barcelona's leaky defence, we fancy the Italian champions to nick a draw.
Inter would do well to erase memories of their last two visits to the Camp Nou where they were thrashed 5-0 in the Gamper Trophy in 2007, as well as suffering a 3-0 defeat in the second group stages in 2003.
Here is a reminder of that match in 2007 where goals by Ronaldinho, Giovanni Dos Santos, Yaya Toure, Andres Iniesta and Thiago Motta capped a fine performance for then-coach Frank Rijkaard’s men. Little chance of a repeat this time around we assure you!
