UEFA Champions League: Arsenal v Standard Liege Preview

A point is all Arsenal require to ensure safe passage into the last 16 of the UEFA Chamnpions League when they host Belgium champions Standard Liege at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Despite needing just a point to ensure their place in the knock-out stages, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will be targeting all three as his men aim to put their shock weekend defeat to Sunderland firmly behind them.

The 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light on Saturday put paid to the Gunners' 13-match unbeaten run which extended all the way back to September when they were humbled 4-2 by Manchester City

Having comprehensively outclassed Group H basement boys AZ Alkmaar 4-1 on matchday 4, the Gunners reaffirmed their UEFA Champions League credentials, but Standard Liege coach Laszlo Boloni believes they are still missing a key ingredient.

"I feel the policy of Arsenal is something really incredible and admirable," Boloni told a press conference.

"Arsene Wenger's policy and the way he manages is very intelligent, and the way he manages his game is also very intelligent.

"I remember discussing with him when I was a young trainer, I was really admiring his intelligence and also his vision about the future of the club - but in comparison to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Chelsea, maybe they lack something,"
he added.

The two met on matchday 1 when the Belgium champions stormed into a 2-0 lead, before the Gunners came roaring back with goals from Nicolas Bendtner, Thomas Vermaelen and striker Eduardo.

Standard currently lie third in the group on four points, however, after grabbing their first win in this year's competition when they downed Olympiakos 2-1 at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne, Les Rouches will be confident of building on their momentum, despite losing to 2-1 away to KAA Gent at the weekend.

Team News:

Arsenal are without Robin Van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner meaning that Eduardo will continue to be the focal point of a three man attack.

Carlos Vela may also feature as well as full-back Kieran Gibbs who should return to first-team action after being injured during England U21's game with Lithuania last week.

Standard Liege are set to continue with the enigmatic Congolese striker Dieumerci Mbokani in attack, while Portuguese defender Ricardo Rocha is set to return to the Emirates for the first time since his days at Tottenham.

Captain and star man Steven Defour remains sidelined with an ankle injury and will miss the chance to showcase his considerable talents off to potential suitors, but highly-rated midfielder Axel Witsel is expected to start.

Probable Line-Ups (*Star Man):

Arsenal
(4-3-3): Almunia; Sagna, Vermaelen, Gallas, Gibbs; Song, Ramsey, Fabregas, Rosicky, Eduardo, Nasri.

Standard Liege (4-4-2): Bolat; Felipe, Sarr, Rocha, Camozzato; Mangala, Witsel, Carcela-Gonzalez, Jovanovic; Mbokani, De Camargo.

ExtraFootie Prediction: Arsenal 3 - 1 Standard Liege 0 We cannot see anything other than a home win as the Gunners gear up for their crucial Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday.
