Premier League Preview: Tottenham v Wigan

Tottenham will be hoping to capitalise on the fact that none of their top-four rivals won on Saturday by securing the three points they need to reaffirm their UEFA Champions League credentials.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Aston Villa all dropped points yesterday, meaning that a win over Wigan today will put Spurs in the box-seat heading into a very busy festive programme.

Tottenham coach Harry Redknapp knows that his troops are in confident mood after beating Sunderland 2-0 at White Hart Lane in their last outing before the international break, and another winnable home fixture could be just what the doctor ordered.

The Latics have lost four times on the road so far this season and despite sitting in thirteenth place, are only 2 points above the drop-zone.

Roberto Martinez's men have blown hot-and-cold this season and inconsistency has been their biggest problem. Witness the 3-1 destruction of league leaders Chelsea at the DW Stadium, only to follow it up with a 4-0 loss to rock-bottom Portsmouth.

The Latics' unpredictable nature is sure to be a worry for Spurs but a win will lift the North London based club up into the much coveted Champions League placings and level on points with eternal rivals Arsenal no less.

Team News:

Tottenham are still without play-maker Luka Modric who has a fractured fibula.

Captain Ledley King will also sit out with a hamstring injury, whilst goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is ruled out for the rest of the season after fracturing his wrists and injuring his pelvis during a motorbike accident.

Redknapp will also have to decide whether or not to use striker Robbie Keane after his midweek exertions for the Republic of Ireland against France in the World Cup qualifiers.

Wigan meanwhile are set to continue with deputy full-back Erik Edman who will face his former club in the wake of Maynor Figueroa’s injury.

It will be the Swedes second only Premier League outing since moving to the DW Stadium, whilst Honduran midfielder Hendry Thomas is set to miss out after missing his flight home from international duty.

Probable Starting XI's; Star Man:

Tottenham (4-4-2)
: Gomes, Corluka, Woodgate, King, Assou-Ekotto, Huddlestone, Palacios, Jenas, Bentley, Crouch, Defoe.

Wigan (4-4-2): Kirkland, Melchiot, Boyce, Bramble, Edman, Scharner, Diame, Thomas, N'Zogbia, Rodallega, Scotland.

ExtraFootie's Prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Wigan. Form-wise the match points to a home win for Spurs, however, Wigan can be a match for anyone on their day and we fancy them to nick a point at White Hart Lane come Sunday afternoon.
