Hughes hopes to woo Torres

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes still dreams of signing Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and hopes that a strong showing form the Citizens at Anfield this weekend can tempt the Spaniard to join the City revolution.

City currently sit sixth in the league table, two points behind fourth placed Tottenham, albeit with a game in hand.

The Citizens have made a fairly strong start to the new campaign, despite a recent blip, and are still strongly tipped to be there or there-abouts come the end of the season.

In fact, according to a Barclays-sponsored League Manager's Association poll on Friday, sixteen out of twenty Premier League managers believe Manchester City will break into the top-flight's top four this season.

Saturday’s lunchtimes mouth-watering clash away to Liverpool will test the credentials of Mark Hughes’ men. However The Reds will be without mercurial striker Fernando Torres, and it is the Spaniard who has captured the Blues' attention, as they continue to chase his signature.

Rafael Benitez declared this week that he would resign if Torres were sold, however, should Liverpool fail to secure a coveted UEFA Champions League spot, ‘El Nino’ could be forced to reconsider his options.

Should that be the case, coach Mark Hughes will be looking to bag the former Atletico Madrid ace and believes that a strong showing in Saturday’s clash could go a long way towards persuading Torres that his future could be at Eastlands.

“We don't discuss players at other clubs because that would be wrong to do," he was quoted in the Independent.

"The way he has been able to come into the Premier League and make the impact he has says everything.

"I've said time and time again it's more difficult for foreign strikers to have an immediate impact in the Premier League because it's just so new to them.

"For him to come him and have the immediate impact like he has done is of great credit to him and the way he approaches the game,”
he added.

Torres is currently sidelined with a groin injury and is also expected to miss Liverpool’s crucial Group E UEFA Champions League clash with Hungarian champions Debrecen on Tuesday.
