David Beckham has suggested that far from having a negative effect on Los Angeles Galaxy, his public row with captain Landon Donovan actually contributed to the team's successful season.
The 34-year-old England midfielder was set upon by Galaxy skipper Donovan after he opted to extend his loan spell with AC Milan earlier this year, which meant he missed the start of the the MLS season.
While Beckham was away in Serie A, a book-entitled 'The Beckham Experiment' was published, featuring quotes from USA striker Donovan in which he questioned Becks' commitment to the Galaxy cause.
And on his return to the Home Depot Centre in July, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was booed by his own fans, who were also disgruntled at Beckham's decision to stay with the Rossoneri in the spring.
However, the trouble has since blown over despite Beckham securing a second loan spell at the San Siro in January, and the England centurion even reckons that the early friction in the camp may have helped the Galaxy this term.
"I don't have to say anything about myself, I'll leave that to other people to decide. But I love playing soccer, I work hard for my team and my team-mates and myself and my manager and the fans, and I hope that's enough for people," he told the Guardian.
"But there's nothing wrong with a bit of controversy in a club. It brings players and teams together and it's done that."
Both Beckham and Donovan have been instrumental in the Galaxy's success this season, the 27-year-old American has scored in each of his side's three play-off match triumphs, leaving Bruce Arena's side one win away from the MLS title.
Should the Galaxy prevail in their MLS Cup final against Real Salt Lake City in Seattle on Sunday, it would complete a remarkable turn around from last season, when Beckham's side finished bottom of their MLS Western Conference.
