There were scenes of pandemonium in Nigeria as the Super Eagles dramatically secured the victory they needed to qualify for next summer’s World Cup.
A late goal by Vfl Wolfsburg striker Obafemi Martins was enough to give Nigeria a 3-2 win over Kenya in a thrilling last-day Group 2 clash.
The win coupled with Tunisia’s shock 1-0 defeat away to Mozambique, meant that Shaiba Amodu’s men will be participating in their fourth World Cup, having participated in 1994, 1998 and 2002.
Understandably, there were scenes of jubilation in the triumphant dressing room.
"The dressing room was unbelievable. Kanu, Yobo, Mikel, they were all weeping tears of joy,” team official Peterside Idah told Supersport after the match.
“A lot of them knew that this was their last chance of playing at the World Cup. This was a Kenyan miracle because a lot of people doubted our chances," he added.
The nation came to a standstill as the country was gripped by the heroics.
"Everywhere you go, the talk is about Nigeria's qualification to next year's World Cup. Even some weddings this weekend were disrupted by what was going on in faraway Kenya," revealed journalist, Norbert Okolie.
A huge celebration party has been organized before Amodu’s men begin to prepare for January’s African Cup of Nations.
Elsewhere, goals by Achille Webo and Samuel Eto’o gave Cameroon a 2-0 win over Morocco. The win confirms the Indomitable Lions’ place in South Africa, and Paul Le Guen’s men will be amongst the dark horses come next summer.
