International Friendly: Wales v Scotland Preview

As Europe's top side's continue their World Cup preparations, home nations Wales and Scotland look towards Euro 2012 with a friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

Both sides decided to keep faith with their respective managers following disappointing 2010 World Cup qualification campaigns as they carry on building towards the future.

Wales boss John Toshack, who will be without a host of first-team regulars, believes the national side will reap the benefits of the development of his current crop of youngsters in future campaigns.

"By bringing in the youngsters these guys have maybe 10 to 12 years in the senior side," the 60-year-old told WalesOnline.

"Someone will benefit from these guys coming through at such an early age,"
said Toshack, who admits the 2012 European Championship will be his last campaign as Wales boss.

The average age of the latest Welsh squad is just 22, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Collison and Joe Ledley being given the chance to shine on the international stage.

Wales have not qualified for a major tournament since 1958 and finished fourth in Group 4 in World Cup qualification behind Germany, Russian and Finland.

Toshack believes the nation's decision to play their home games at local club grounds on a trial basis, as opposed to 74,500-seater Millennium Stadium, will help create an intimidating atmosphere for the opposition.

"The Millennium Stadium was not right for us, I think it is fair to say,"
confirmed Toshack, whose side have not won in their last three attempts at home.

"Once Scotland showed an interest it was an opportunity to get a feel of an alternative stadium.

"Then it became a more interesting date as it would be a good trial run for everybody."

All eyes will be on George Burley's side to start showing signs of improvement following a poor qualification campaign, which saw them finish third in Group 9 behind runaway winners Holland and Norway.

Burley's future was considered following defeats to Macedonia and Norway, however the former Ipswich man has been given a second chance ahead of 2012.

"This isn't a fresh start, it's about building on what we had against Macedonia and Holland, what we had in the squad," Burley told The Daily Record.

"As a team structure you need to look at things and that's what we'll be doing in Cardiff. It will be an attacking team and we're trying to create attacking play.

"
I've got my thoughts about how we're going to start, the shape we're going to play, the attacking play we're working on. This is an ideal game to do that."
