Ligue 1 VIDEO Round-Up: Lyon 5-5 Marseille

ExtraFootie reviews what was without doubt the game of the weekend not only in France but perhaps in all of Europe as French giants Lyon and Marseille shared the spoils in a simply exhilarating 5-5 draw!

When ExtraFootie told you on Friday that Ligue 1 has enough entertainment and quality this season to no longer be regarded as a 'Mickey-mouse' league, we sure knew what we were talking about!

Now, a 5-5 draw hardly inspires class defending, nor, does it exactly pertain to significant quality, indeed, when Arsenal beat Tottenham 5-4 at White Hart Lane in 2004, then Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho branded the match more akin to 'hockey' then football.

However, after Sunday night's cinematic and breathtaking encounter at the Stade Gerland, many will want to see such 'hockey' matches again!

With nine different scorers you'll need to bear with us as we sift through this simply unforgettable match which will forever be hailed as a classic.

The hosts took the lead after just two-and-a-half minutes when Bosnian playmaker Miralem Pjanic chested Kim Kallstrom's pass before volleying the ball over Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda for 1-0.

The blockbuster match had the early goal these type of encounters need and it was a harbinger of things to come when eight minutes later Marseille were level as Souleymane Diawara rose to head home Fabrice Abriel's corner.

Sidney Govou then produced a mazy run, skipping past three Marseille defenders before slotting past Mandanda to restore Les Gones' lead just three minutes later. Are you keeping up so far?

Amazingly, l'OM were unperturbed, buoyed as they were by their superlative 6-1 midweek thrashing of FC Zurich and just before the break they equalised when Benoit Cheyrou fired a 25-yarder past Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

One thing was sure as the teams went in at the break level at 2-2, the fans were certainly getting value for money compared to last season's 0-0 bore draw in the corresponding fixture!

In a dramatic turn of events Didier Deschamps' men grabbed the lead a minute into the second-half when pint-sized winger Bakary Kone stabbed the ball past Lloris for 3-2.

Then followed a thirty minute lull with neither side scoring before Brandao decided he wanted to get on the score sheet - volleying home Abriel's corner to give l'OM a seemingly unassailable 4-2 lead in the 78th minute.

Unbelievably Lyon refused to give up, testament to their fighting spirit which Liverpool fans will know all about.

The comeback began in the 80th minute when Lisandro Lopez seized on a neat chip by Jean Makoun before tucking the ball beneath the on-rushing Mandanda for 4-3.

Minutes later Marseille defender Gabriel Heinze was penalized for a hand-ball and Lopez swept home the penalty for 4-4.

Then with injury-time looming Claude Puel's men took the lead when the Brazlian Michel Bastos seized on Pjanic's pass and fired past Mandanda for 5-4 to send the Stade Gerland and watching owner Jean-Michel Aulas delirious.

But then Marseille showed just why they are serious championship contenders this season when deep into injury-time after an almighty goalmouth scramble, Jeremy Toulalan turned the ball into his own net for 5-5. Phew!

Whoever wrote the script to this match sure knows how to thrill and entertain, and ExtraFootie salutes one of the most memorable matches in years.

After all that Lyon remain in second place on 24 points, just one behind leaders Bordeaux, who lost 2-0 away to Lille, while Marseille slip to eightth on 19 points, six behind Les Girondins although they do have a game in hand.
