Red Bull Salzburg and Shakhtar Donetsk extended their 100 per cent records in the group stages, Steve McClaren's FC Twente got a much-needed win and there were plenty of other goals besides.
Where else to start but at El Madrigal, where Villarrael and Lazio were involved in an incident-laden affair as Ernesto Valverde's side drew level on points with their Italian rivals and got revenge for defeat in the Stadio Olimpico a fortnight ago.
The Yellow Submarines got off to a flyer, with former Arsenal favourite Robert Pires netting early on, and moments late Lazio were done to ten men, Roberto Baronio given his marching orders.
It got even better for the Spaniards when Cani made it 2-0 before a Pires penalty made it three.
More first-half drama followed as Gonzalo was sent off for the home side, but from the resulting penalty kick Pasquale Foggia could only hit the bar.
Into the second half and Mauro Zarate pulled one back for the Italians before Giuseppe Rossi converted a spot-kick to restore Villarael's three goal advantage, and 4-1 it finished.
In Group G's other game Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg made it four wins from four, Franz Schiemer getting the only goal away to Levski Sofia, who had Georgi Sarmov sent off.
2009 UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk did what they do well and won for their fourth game in a row in the competition to qualify to the knockout phase leaving Toulouse with a lot to do.
Brazilian Luis Adriano, who was prolific in the competition last term, got the first after the break with a neat turn and shot before Oleksiy Gai slotted the second
And in Group J's other game Club Brugge moved away from Partizan Belgrade with an eventful 4-2 victory against their Serbian rivals, leaving them three points clear of Toulouse in second place.
The Belgium side went into the break two goals to the good thanks to strikes from Ivan Perisic and Rostand Dorge Kouemaha before on loan Mnachester United star Adem Ljajic pulled one back for the home side.
Kouemaha then got his second before Da Silva Washington again made things interesting at 3-2, but Vadis Odjija Ofoe then made sure of a Brugge win as Mladen Krstajic was given his marching orders for Partizan late on.
Steve McClaren's FC Twente picked up the pace in Group H, moving up to second after a narrow victory over Sheriff Tiraspol. Miroslav Stoch got the goals for McClaren's side, an Ismael Cheik Tiote own goal briefly gave the Moldovan's hope.
In the same group Fenerbahce extended their lead at the top with a comfortable 3-1 win over Steaua Bucharest. Clarindo Andre Santos opened the scoring for the Greeks, before Pantelis Kapetanos equalised for the Bulgarians.
After the interval Fabio Da Silva Bilica put the Istanbul side back in front before Alex made sure of the win. Steaua remain bottom and almost certainly on their way out.
Group K remains a close affair, after a Sparta Prague 3-2 victory over Cluj took them within touching distance of leaders PSV, who were held by Copenhagen.
The game in Romania was a good one, Jan Holenda's first half brace put Sparta Prague frimly in control, before Lacina Traore got one back for Cluj. The Romanians then had two players dismissed before grabbing a dramatic 90th minute equaliser through Sebastian Dubarbier.
Sadly it wasn't enough for nine-man Cluj, as Sparta nicked it right at the death, Bony Wilfred winning it in injury time.
Copenhagen's point at home to group leaders PSV keeps them in contention. They took the lead through a penalty from former Chelsea man Jesper Gronkjaer, but Balazs Dzsudzsak equalised for the Dutch side in the second half.
Finally in Group L it was business as usual for German's Werder Bremen as two late goals from Tim Borowski and Hugo Almeida saw off Austria Vienna extending the Bundesliga side's lead at the top of the group to three points from second placed Athletic Bilbao.
The Spaniards needed a late penalty from Joseba EtxeberrÃa to draw level with ten man Nacional, who had Miguel Sousa Nuno Pinto sent off late on. The Portuguese side had taken a first half lead through a Miguel Sousa Nuno Pinto penalty.
The draw was only Nacional's second point of the campaign, and they remain a way off the two established European names in the group with fellow minnows Austria Vienna.
