Super sub Bafetimbi Gomis returned to haunt his former club as he came off to bench to score the winner in an enthralling Derby du Rhone between St Etienne and Lyon.
To score against your former club is one of football’s great unwritten rule, and Gomis duely provided yet another example to give Claude Puel's men a priceless 1-0 win over derby rivals St Etienne at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
In a tight, yet absorbing match, Les Gones spent much of the first half camped in their own half as the hosts tried to make home advantage count.
The best chance of the first-half fell to Argentinian striker Gonzalo Bergessio, who saw his point blank header brilliantly held by France No.1 goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The second period brought much change however in mentality and Lyon started to emerge from their shell as the visitors began to sense the tide turning.
Firstly, Lisandro Lopez narrowly missed the target by millimetres before the former FC Porto star saw his shot brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Jeremy Janot.
Captain Sidney Govou then saw his improvised header flash inches wide as Lyon began to turn the screw on their opponents.
And as former St Etienne hitman Bafetimbi Gomis entered the fray to a crescendo of boos, fate was to deal a cruel blow on Les Verts.
St Etienne keeper Janot turned from hero to villain as he inexplicably palmed a Kim Kallstrom corner into the path of Gomis, who turned the ball home to silence the boisterous home crowd with just seven minutes left on the clock.
Gomis became just the sixth player in French football history to transfer directly from Saint-Étienne to rivals Lyon when he made an controversial €13million switch to the Stade Gerland in the summer.
The win moves Lyon up to second in the table, just two points behind champions Bordeaux who beat in-form Monaco 1-0 on Saturday night.
Didier Deschamp's Marseille drop to seventh after being held 1-1 by Toulouse at the Stade Velodrome.
