ExtraFootie's Raj Mannick braves the murky waters of the Europa League to bring you the good, the bad, and the ugly from an exhausting night, including a drubbing for Everton, a last-gasp equaliser at Craven Cottage, and some traumatically poor refereeing decisions.
Game of the Night - Fulham's 1-1 home draw with Roma. Hangeland put the Cottagers ahead in the first-half before Riise won a penalty for the Italian side in the second, which was shrouded in controversy (see Donkey) and saw Stephen Kelly eventually sent off. When Schwarzer made a fantastic save from the spot-kick it seemed Hodgson's boys would take a famous scalp. But with literally the last kick of the game Marco Andreolli squeezed home an equaliser to break Fulham hearts. Top notch drama!
Performance of the Night - Benfica's 5-0 spanking of Everton at the Estadio da Luz. Although David Moyes had few first-team regulars to choose from, take nothing away from Benfica whose sublime dynamism in the middle of the park and exquisitely ruthless finishing made the Toffees look embarrassingly short of ability and flair compared to their Portuguese opponents.
Upset of the Night - Lazio's 2-1 victory over Villarreal. On paper not so much an upset, but anyone at the game will wonder how the Spanish side didn't win it. Going into the break 1-1, the Yellow Submarine dominated Lazio in the second half and kept the ball for large parts creating chance after chance. The result seemed a foregone conclusion when Lazio's Matuzalem was sent off for 'simulation', but amazingly the Biancocelesti won it at the death with a strike from supersub Rocchi. Backs against the wall stuff!
Player of the Night - Angel di Maria's scintillating performance on the left wing was a thing of beauty with the Argentine setting up four goals in Benfica's thrashing over Everton as well as dazzling the home crowd (and Everton defenders!) with his sensational footwork. Angel, you're class son!
Donkey of the Night - Dear oh dear. Tonight a pair of donkeys were found gracing the hallowed turf of Craven Cottage; both looked and smelt like referees. Awarding Roma a penalty was fair enough, but for referee Paul Allaerts and his goalmouth official, who was one yard away, to send off Hangeland who was nowhere near the challenge was ludicrous. Minutes (yes, minutes!) later Stephen Kelly confesses it was he who felled John Arne Riise and the decision is reluctantly changed. And after all that Schwarzer pulled off a cracking save from Menez' penalty. The referee's a... donkey!
Goal of the Night - Any one of Benfica's goals involving the deceitful footwork of Angel di Maria followed by an inch-perfect cross from the left and tidy finish. There were three of them for Tony Hibbert to forget.
Talking Point of the Night - Fulham's penalty concession which saw the fifth official intervene to get the wrong man sent off! Further proof if ever it was needed that the redundant goalmouth officials do little but add further confusion to a referee's already befuddled brain.
Team of the Night (3-4-3) - Schwarzer (Fulham), Luisao (Benfica), Hangeland (Fulham), David Luiz (Benfica), Di Maria (Benfica), Fernandinho (Shakhtar Donetsk), Perisic (Club Brugge) Kazim-Richards (Fenerbache), Saviola (Benfica), Pizarro (Werder Bremen), Cardozo (Benfica)
