Barcelona playmaker Xavi is a marked man

Barcelona midfield maestro Xavi has expressed his frustration after Almeria parked the proverbial bus at Camp Nou on Saturday as La Blaugrana struggled to a 1-0 win.

The 29-year-old's comments betray the difference between the Spanish top-flight and the Premier League, where such stifling tactics are commonplace and come as par for the course when 'Big Four' meet relegation strugglers.

And England's top sides can even be guilty of a touch of negativity themselves, as Barca discovered when Chelsea took their 'anti-football' to Catalunya in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final last season.

Xavi claimed Almeria's tactics reached new heights as the Andalusia club attempted to hold out for ninety minutes against Pep Guardiola's high-flying side, who secured the win with a stunning goal from youngster Pedro.

But Barca's tormentor in chief Xavi concedes the European champions will have to get used to teams doing that as they try to find a way of stopping arguably the greatest footballing side of all time.

"I have never been marked like that. It was obsessive,"
he told the Daily Star. "Even when they had the ball or when I was going to take a corner, they marked me.

"It's a shame that they came here to pack the defence, but we will have to get used to it."

Following Real Madrid's 2-1 defeat to Sevilla on Sunday evening, Barca have a three point lead at the top of La Liga after six rounds of matches.

The Bus

Thats my point exactly - that teams park the bus in both England and Spain.
However the article suggested that its only teams in England which do this against the big four and is something new to Spanish football.
I just think there is a lot of arrogance from some EPL supporters who slate the level of defending in Spain, when inferior sides to Barca are scoring more freely in England.

I have never seen teams set up so defensively than they do against Barca week in week out, even the top teams in the CL.

I think Xavis comments were out of frustration that Barc are used to rolling teams over, but this is impossible every week.

Also, Atletico Madrid rarely park the bus and are one of the few teams that will generally have a go at Barca.

Clearly it is...

"I have never been marked like that. It was obsessive," - I think Xavi's comments tell you that the way he was marked was new on this occasion???! No?

And you kinda answer ur own statement - you say that every week Barca play against teams that "park the bus", yet they still score for fun, ie 5 Atletico Madrid, 4 Racing Santander.

Teams do do it in England - Blackburn 4-5-1 against Arsenal, Birmingham 4-5-1 Man Utd - its just they are not very good at it!

Same when teams play against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - very rarely will you see teams play 4-4-2 against them, as they look to stifle!

The Bus

Teams in Spain play like this against Barca every single week its nothing new that they will have to get used to. Even Madrid play like that against Barca.
It was just in this game that Almeria had absolutley no ambition in the game, even when losing.

As for lower teams parking the bus and being more defensively disciplined against the top four in England thats laughgable and a myth.

A far inferior Arsenal side in EPL have scored 24 goals in 7 games this season. Puting 6 past Everton, 6 past Blackburn, 4 past Wigan and 4 past Portsmouth.

Liverpool have put 4 past Stoke, 4 past Burnley and 6 past Hull.

Man Utd have put 4 past Man City and 5 past Wigan

There are 3 good defenses in England - Man Utd , Liverpool and Chelsea, the rest are probably worse than whats in Spain.
