ExtraFootie rounds up the highlights - and lowlights - of Tuesday night's Carling Cup third round action, including a seven-goal thriller at Stoke and a shock victory for Portsmouth!
Game of the Night - Stoke's dramatic 4-3 win over Blackpool at the Britannia Stadium. The Potters pulled the game back after finding themselves 2-0 down and with the game poised at 3-3, extra-time looked a certainty. That was until Andy Griffin struck deep into injury time, his 96th minute winner clinching this scintillating tie.
Performance of the Night - Bolton's late comeback over fellow Premier League outfit West Ham. Going 1-0 after 60 minutes, the Trotters left it very late to grab the equaliser with Kevin Davies scoring with three minutes remaining. This sparked a momentum shift in extra-time and a reborn Bolton side broke Hammers' hearts with goals from Gary Cahill and Johan Elmander.
Upset of the Night - Despite beating lower league opposition, it remains a shock that Portsmouth have won a football match! Pompey's 3-1 victory over Carlisle is their first win of the season and could signal a dramatic reversal of fortune in the Premier League...or not.
Player of the Night - Ricardo Fuller. Was instrumental in
Stoke's comback at home to Championship side Blackpool. At 2-0 down,
Fuller came off the bench to change the game with a determined and
spirited performance, including an assist and a crucial goal. Good lad
Ricardo!
Donkey of the Night - Jerome Thomas of West Brom. The former Gunner helped his old teammates to a 2-0 win when he was sent off after clashing with Jack Wilshere. Jerome, you donkey!
Goal of the Night - Anderson De Silva's superb 25 yard strike into the top corner sent
Barnsley 2-1 up at Oakwell and the fans will be remembering this one for many years to come.
Talking Point of the Night - Leeds United may feel aggrieved after a first-half finish from Luciano Becchio was wrongly ruled offside with the scores level at 0-0. Had that goal stood we may well have been talking about a shock exit for Liverpool at Elland Road.
Team of the Night (4-3-3) - Szczesny (Arsenal), Vanden Borre (Portsmouth), Mensah (Sunderland), Carragher (Liverpool), Williams (Peterborough), Reid (Sunderland), De Silva (Barnsley), Snodgrass (Leeds), Utaka (Portsmouth), Fuller (Stoke), Ngog (Liverpool)
