Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has paid tribute to Chris Kirkland for the bravery the he showed to play on with a dislocated finger during the Latics' 1-1 draw with Manchester City last weekend.
Kirland, 28, picked up the injury in the second half of Sunday's Premier League clash with City at the DW Stadium but still managed to complete the full 90 minutes.
Bearing this in mind, Extrafootie looks at some other heroic players who have continued to play on beyond the pain threshold.

In 2005, the 27-year-old Grenada striker fractured his fibia [leg] in the 10th minute of Wigans' victory over Reading.
However, that did not stop him scoring one and setting up another before hobbling off in the 63rd minute as Wigan won 3-1 to complete the journey from non-League obscurity to the top flight.
Terry Butcher
During a vital World Cup qualifier in Sweden, Butcher suffered a deep cut in his head that was temporarily stitched up by the England physio.
Heavily bandaged, he insisted on returning to the pitch to help England’s Italia '90 cause and did not stop heading the ball, which re-opened the wound.
As he came off at the end of the match, with the all-important draw secured, his face, bandages and shirt were red with blood.
Paul Ince
The dynamic midfielder embodied England’s World Cup qualifying campaign for France '98 in a 0-0 draw against Italy in October 1997.
In a ferocious affair, the defensive midfielder was forced off in a simlar fashion to Terry Butcher but he came back on to help secure the Three Lions safe passage to the finals.
And finally:
Ronaldo
The Brazilian was suffering from convulsions, much like having an epileptic attack prior to his nations World Cup final encounter with France in 1994.
He was taken to a hospital for tests just a few hours before the match, while the remaining members of the team were being driven to the Stade de France.
The official line-up was turned in and Ronaldo's name was not listed on the team sheet, yet, despite this, Il Fenomeno would still start the match.
It has been since revealed that Ronaldo asked then coach Mario Zagallo to play in the game despite his ill tidings.
Zagallo accepted and Ronaldo was allowed to feature following a last minute plea from President of CBF Ricardo Teixeira to the FIFA commission.

The poor bloke looked in agony alright so fair play to him playing on. The pictures on tv of him having his finger forced back in to place were terrible, it's good to see a player going through the pain barrier for his club.
