Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has tipped new signing Jason Scotland to become a 'cult hero' at the DW Stadium after the club confirmed the Swansea striker has signed a two-year deal with the club. The 30-year-old Trinidad & Tobago international received clearance from the Football Association after being
granted a work permit on Wednesday morning and must now await the arrival of his visa
and international clearance before he can be officially presented as a Latics player.
However, Martinez is delighted to be on the
verge of completing the signing of the prolific hitman, with whom he worked with for two years at the Liberty Stadium, and believes he has all the attributes to become a 'key' player for the club in the coming seasons.
"Jason is a natural goalscorer, I can't really put it any other way," the Spanish tactician told the
official website."Every manager wants a player who has that clinical ability to make something happen in the box, and Jason can do that.
"He is strong, very physical, and his feet can produce the magic ingredient every team needs in the box. This was always going to be a key signing for me.
"I have every faith he can make the step up to the Premier League and become a real cult hero at the Latics."I know from experience how the Wigan fans love a goalscorer. Graeme Jones, Andy Liddell, Nathan Ellington, Jason Roberts. I am confident Jason can be the next name on that list."Scotland, who scored an impressive 53 goals in 105 games in two seasons with the Swans, becomes Martinez's third signing of the summer following the acquisitions of
Espanyol playmaker Jordi Gomez and
Honduras international midfielder Hendry Thomas from
Deportivo Olimpia.
