Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted that he would offer former Gunner Sol Campbell a contract at the Emirates Stadium, should he feel the need to add a defender to his squad.
'The Professor' said he felt his side currently have enough defenders to cope, but
should that situation change he would consider bringing the 35-year-old centre-back back to the club.
Campbell has been training with the Gunners in recent weeks in order to maintain fitness, much like David Beckham did last year, having left Notts County just three weeks into a lucrative five-year deal back in September.
The former England international had been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent
days after resolving his contract dispute with the Magpies, but Sir Alex
Ferguson has since poured cold water on those rumours.
However, Wenger was not so quick to discount a move for the former Portsmouth ace, though he did surmise that a move was unlikely, saying at a pre-match press conference: "I have not really thought about that.
"At the moment, we have four centre-backs and we will always have four.
"If one would go, then I would consider it, but at the moment we have four, so I have no need to sign anybody else.
"I love Sol Campbell and the fact he came back here and wanted to practice with us shows he loves the club as well.
"You never say never in these kinds of situations.
"Sol can still do a job in the Premier League, especially now he is fit. He has worked very hard."
