Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp understood to be preparing a £25million swap deal, involving David Bentley, to take Aston Villa winger Ashley Young to White Hart Lane.
According to a report in
The Daily Mail, Redknapp is keen to re-structure his squad this summer and is willing to part with £15million-rated Bentley, who has flopped since his big-money move from from
Blackburn last summer, in part-exchange for the highly-rated Young.
Redknapp is known to be a huge admirer of the 23-year-old winger, who is believed to fancy a return to London, and would ideal love to bring him to the Lane to solve his problem left-wing position.
However, Villa boss Martin O'Neill would be loath to lose his prized asset, who has been in scintillating form for Villa over the past two years, and is unlikely to entertain the idea of selling him despite being a fan of Bentley and fellow Spurs players Tom Huddlestone and Jermaine Jenas - who could also be offered as part of any deal for Young.
With his move for Young likely to fail, Redknapp may decide to re-enter the race to sign
Middlesbrough wide-man Stewart Downing, while he retains an interest in 36-year Portuguese superstar Luis Figo, who appears ready to perform a u-turn on his decision to retire, and Lille's highly-rated Brazilian Michel Bastos.
However, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy insisting that Redknapp finances his transfer activity this summer after forking out almost £200million on a squad that failed to qualify for
Europe last season, a move for Downing, who is valued at £10million by Boro, move well be out of his reach until he moves players on.
