Sunderland have seen off reported late interest from Premier League rivals Tottenham to capture the signature of Paraguay captain Paulo Da Silva on a three-year contract.
The 29-year-old defender, who was linked with a move to
Celtic last year, arrives at the Stadium of Light on a free transfer after his contract with Mexican side Deportivo Toluca expired.
Speaking to the club's
official website, Black Cats boss Steve Bruce expressed his delight at his latest South American acquisition and believes he can make a huge impact on Wearside.
"I'm delighted to have signed a player of Paulo's experience," said Bruce.
"He is captain of his country and has played at the highest level in South America, so will bring leadership qualities to our side."Da Silva, who has won over 50 caps for his country, has spent time in
Europe before having played in
Italy with
Perugia and Venezia.
He becomes Bruce's second signing since taking charge of
Sunderland after the former
Wigan boss won the battle to sign Fraizer Campbell from
Manchester United in a deal which could rise to £6million.
