Former Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Edgar Davids is in talks with Portsmouth over the possibility of coming out of retirement to play at Fratton Park.
Davids announced the end of his illustrious playing career at the end of the 2007/08 season, following a brief spell with his former club Ajax, but his time away from the game has only served to re-ignite his passion for the sport.
According to the Daily Mail, the veteran defensive midfielder, nicknamed 'The Pitbull', was set for a move to Championship side Leicester City, until Pompey came in with a late bid to lure Davids to the South Coast.
The goggle-eyed 36-year-old has flown to England for talks with both clubs, who are prepared to offer him around £20,000-a-week to end his one-year hiatus from the game.
New Portsmouth owner Ali Al Faraj has promised under-pressure manager Paul Hart funds to bring in players in January and the experienced Davids would offer some much needed steel to his midfield until further recruits arrive.
Following wholesale changes over the summer amid rising debts, the South Coast endured the worst start to a season for a top-flight team in 79-years, setting a new Premier League record of seven straight defeats.
Following a win over Wolves at the start of the month, Hart's side were beaten 2-1 by Spurs and former manager Harry Redknapp on Saturday.
The Suriname-born midfielder has a wealth of experience having played over 150 games for Juve, where he won three Serie A titles and the Champions League, while he also enjoyed spells at AC Milan and Barcelona.
Davids still feels he still has something to offer in the top-flight and will relish the chance to improve the fortunes of the struggling club.
