Lost in Translation: Al-Fahim & the Premier League

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has revealed the extent to which the club's former owner Sulaiman Al-Fahim is a man who is used to doing things in his own time.
The Dubai-based businessman's brief reign at Fratton Park (six weeks to be exact) was fraught with financial uncertainty, never more so than when he failed to pay his players' monthly wages on time, owing to what he called a 'bankroll issue'.
However, Storrie has explained that the 32-year-old's most lackadaisical moment came when, with the new season approaching and Portsmouth still light on numbers, Al-Fahim casually suggested that they extend the transfer window!
"When he did the takeover deal on August 29, I said, 'we're going to have great difficulty completing things and getting players in by the transfer deadline'. He said, 'can't you get them to extend the deadline?' That gives you a bit of an idea of what he's like," Storrie told The Independent.
Pompey managed to draft in no fewer than 13 players before the transfer window shut, but it was not enough to prevent them from losing their first seven league games - a Premier League record.
And to be fair to SAF (not Sir Alex...), he did seem to have the club's best intentions at heart, even if he had a somewhat warped idea of the pace at which the English game moves, something Storrie did not fail to acknowledge.
"He genuinely had, and still has, a regard for the club and genuinely thought he could bring all these things in.
"But he just thought he could keep putting things back and I know it's hard to understand, but that was how he thought," he concluded.
