Portsmouth are reportedly on the verge of signing veteran hitman Mark Viduka after a £5.5million deal for Croatia international striker Nikola Kalinic collapsed following a row over the payment of the transfer fee.
New Pompey boss Paul Hart moved quickly to secure Viduka on a one-year contract at Fratton Park after his
Hull City counterpart Phil Brown also showed interest in the 33-year-old after failing in his attempts to sign
five strikers this summer.
The
Australia international is a free agent after being released from
Newcastle United at the end of last season in the wake of the club's relegation to the Championship and is said to be keen to end his career on the South Coast before announcing his retirement next year.
Pompey's move for Viduka follows the collapse of the Kalinic deal, with the 21-year-old now understood to be close to joining Portuguese champions FC Porto.
Kalinic - who has been desribed by his national boss Slaven Bilic as the
"future of Croatian football" - had flown to London to complete a medical on Wednesday after agreeing personal terms but Pompey pulled the plug on the deal following a row over agents' fees and the terms of the transfer.
As
ExtraFootie revealed on Thursday, Pompey wanted to stagger the £5.5million fee over three years, but Kalinic's club Hadjuk Split demanded the bulk of the cash up front.
Meanwhile, former
Liverpool full-back Steve Finnan has signed a one-year deal at the club after linking up with the squad for their pre-season tour of
Portugal and arrives on a free transfer from Espanyol.
