Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari has revealed that he would 'love' the chance to return to Portsmouth. The 30-year-old
Zimbabwe international spent two years at Fratton Park following his arrival from French side
Auxerre in a £4.1million deal in 2006.
The hitman, who was recommended to Pompey boss Harry Redknapp by
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, made 79 league appearances for the club and scored a respectable 19 goals.
However, he has struggled to make an impact at Eastlands since joining City in a deal worth approximately £4million in February last year, scoring just four goals in 21 games.
Despite recent reports linking him with a move to
Stoke, Benjani has suggested that he may prefer to return to the South Coast if City boss Mark Hughes decides to sell him this summer.
"I have good memories and I have a special relationship with the Portsmouth supporters," he said in
The News."I left on a good note and I have nothing but good feelings about them, that's for sure."I'd love to play for them again, but at the moment I'm contracted to Manchester City.
"In football, you never know what is around the corner."However, with UAE businessman Sulaiman Al Fahim still awaiting ratification from the Premier League before completing his takeover of the club and with Pompey still without a manager, a move for Benjani seems unlikely at this juncture anyway.
