Sol Campbell may yet be given permission to join a top flight club before the January transfer window, following confirmation from the Premier League that it would consider an appeal from the player.
The 35-year-old defender was previously expected to be denied an immediate return to football after walking out of Notts County last month, according to FIFA rules which prohibit such a move under the circumstances.
However, the former Arsenal and Tottenham man has been buoyed by the news that he would be supported by the Professional Footballers Association if he choose to appeal against the ruling, citing exceptional circumstances.
Campbell quit the Magpies just one game into a lucrative five-year deal, and later revealed that his decision was prompted by the fact that he felt the club had broken promises with regards to projected investment.
PFA chief executive Gordan Taylor suggested the 71 times capped ace should consider an appeal, and added that the organisation would lend its support were he to do so.
"I think he might want to do that," Taylor told The Guardian. "There would be a few hoops to jump through and he would have to cite exceptional circumstances.
"He's a good lad and I think we should try to do something for him."
Ipswich, West Ham and Hull have all expressed an interest in Campbell, who has himself insisted that he feels the right move could put him in consideration for a recall to the England squad in time for the World Cup. Yeah, right!
Former boss Arsene Wenger has given the defender his backing, insisting that he is still capable of playing at the top level.
"I believe Sol has enough still in the locker to play in the Premier League and I knew that it would be difficult for him [at Notts County]," the Frenchman said.
