So why did Campbell quit Notts County?

ExtraFootie examines all of the 'supposed' explanations given for Sol Campbell's shock exit from Notts County - from a nightmare debut to disillusionment with the Magpies long-term prospects.
The 35-year-old shocked the world of football when he joined the ambitious League Two outfit in last August, penning a five year deal, worth an estimated £10million, but after just one game he has walked out.
Many of the reasons circulating focus on Campbell's apparent frustration in discovering that the Magpies could not keep to promises they had made regarding the club's long-term progression.
Campbell is said to have doubted that the promised investment would materialise, both in terms of buying new players and also in improving the club's facilities and infrastructure, according to The Independent.
Another suggestion is that Campbell took up the challenge as there was a chance he would be offered a management position at the end of his five-year stay, by which time, it was hoped, County would be gracing the Premier League. Again, he doubted the club would progress so far in reality.
No doubt this is the line Campbell will take when he eventually explains his actions. In truth, it looks like the former England star is simply covering up what was a massive piece of poor judgment.
The defender had a torrid time in his debut. There is a suspicion that he is unfit, and he was off the pace against Morecambe, so much so that he broke Shrimps' midfielder Emmanuel Panther's toe with a late tackle.
Another version is that he was frustrated by the competence of his new teammates, Campbell apparently criticised his fellow County defenders' hesitation, despite the fact that he was equally to blame for Morecambe's second.
All of this begs the question: what did he expect? Jumping down to the fourth tier of Englaish football is bound to be a culture shock for a guy who has played at the top of his profession for the past 15 years!
Campbell was apparently given an 'unpleasant reality check' after his debut, according to ESPN - League Two not quite the stroll in the park he had reportedly expected.
County's chief executive Peter Trembling is just as ambiguous in his explanation of the events, simply stating that: "Sometimes decisions are made, people make wrong decisions".
Whatever Campbell's excuse, he has now indelibly joined the likes of Dietmar Hamann, Joey Beauchamp and David Unsworth in the all-time 'shortest transfers' lists.
