Ambitious League Two outfit Notts County are set to pull off another major transfer coup by bringing Maltese hitman Michael Mifsud to Meadow Lane on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old is a free agent having being released by Championship side Coventry City at the end of last season after a successful two-year spell at the Ricoh Arena where he scored 16 goals in 86 appearances.

The Malta international has has had plenty of interest in his services from a host of clubs on the continent and is believed to have rejected moves to Turkish side Ankaragucu and Greek outfit Larissa.

Championship duo Sheffield United and Newcastle as well as League One leaders Charlton are all thought to have expressed an interest in the man they call the 'Mosquito', but it appears he is close to a switch to Nottingham.

Mifsud would become the lastest in a long-list of high-profile arrivals at Meadow Lane following the appointment of former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson as the club's director of footballl.

Kasper Schmeichel arrived in a club-record £1.5million deal from Manchester City while Sol Campbell, 34, joined on a free transfer from Portsmouth as the Magpies look to mount a serious title challenge.

Mifsud is widely expected to put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal next week and could be in line to mkae his debut for Ian McParland's men away to Morecambe next Saturday.
