Alberto Aquilani finally made his long awaited Liverpool debut on Wednesday night, turning out for the reserves against Sunderland's reserves at Tranmere's Prenton Park.
The 25-year-old midfield maestro arrived at Anfield for £20million from boyhood club Roma at the beginning of August, but has been recovering from an ankle injury which has sidelined him since March.
With the Reds currently on their worst run in 22 years, the hype surrounding Aquilani's return to fitness has escalated to the point he is now tipped to be the saviour of Liverpool when he finally does make his first-team debut.
As one of just three signings made by Rafael Benitez in the summer, Aquilani, who is renowned for his pinpoint passing ability and long range shots, is seen as the natural successor for departed playmaker Xabi Alonso, who Liverpool have missed desperately thus far.
The Italy international came on in the 75th minute and had some nice touches, playing just off the front two, and most importantly suffered no reaction in his recovery from his recent injury troubles.
Aquilani is now being tipped for a first-team debut in Liverpool's Carling Cup tie against Arsenal next Wednesday, although some anxious Reds fans have speculated that he could make a dramatic appearance against Manchester United on Sunday.
Here is some brief footage of his eagerly anticipated return to action:
