Gerrard - Title race starts now for Liverpool

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has issued a warning to Chelsea and Manchester United by insisting that the Reds' title charge starts now.

Rafa Benitez's men have suffered a disappointing start to the new Premier League season as they look to end 20 years of frustration and hurt in the red half of Merseyside by bringing the league title back to Anfield.

However, defeats to Tottenham and Aston Villa in their opening five league games - the same amout of losses they incurred in the whole of last season - have left many to question their title credentials.

Chelsea sit at the top of the pile with five wins from as many games - six points better off than the Reds, but face fourth-placed Tottenham on Sunday in what should be an enthralling encounter.

Manchester United, in second, welcome third-placed Manchester City to Old Trafford in the lunchtime kick-off in the most eagerly anticipated derby in years.

And with West Ham up next for Gerrard and his team-mates, the England international insists this weekend could prove the cataylst for a sustained challenge for that elusive league crwon this season,

"It was a tough start for us this season because we lost two games close together and we knew it was going to take time to recover from that,"
Gerrard told The Daily Mail.

"But we're slowly getting back to where we want to be. It's a big weekend for the title race, so hopefully we can get a win and turn things around."

Gerrard

How wrong you are Stevie Gerrard.

The league began on the 16th of September, since when Liverpool have dropped 6 points in games against Spurs (a) and Villa (h).
Defeats like these are not the mark of champions. Liverpool may even struggle to get in the top 4 on this form, just look at the game last night against Debrecen - very poor.

Gerrard is the only world class player they have.

Torres had one good season (2007/08), because it was in the EPL for a high profile side Premiership and media fans were gushing over him being the best striker in the world.
However the guy can barely hold up th ball and since then teams have worked out if dont let him turn then he is not a threat.

The fact is Torres has only had one such goalscoring season in his whole career. His record at Madrid and Liverpool (outwith that one outstanding season) are decent but not as great as some would like to believe.

Also look at Torres at international level, spearheading the best attacking unit in international football he has 23 in 70 games. Compare this to his strike partner David Villa 33 in 50 games.

Liverpool just dont have the players or squad to win this league and thats if they keep Gerrard and Torres fit.
