The Cottagers are poised to land Damien Duff from Championship outfit Newcastle United, after Fulham boss Roy Hodgson confrmed that he was set for a medical in West London.
The news will be welcomed by the Craven Cottage faithful. Hodgson has tried repeatedly to bring in some extra attacking players this summer, but has largely failed.
Duff, 30, has seen his career stall somewhat, largely through injuries. But when fit, the Irish international is a potent attacking weapon capable of terrorising any defence in the Premier League.
Playing at the highest level is also thought to be important to Duff if he is to secure his place in Giovanni Trappatoni's Ireland World Cup squad.
Fulham look set to give him that chance. Only a few details need to be ironed out according to Hodgson.
"I think he's been allowed to come down and he's having a medical," he told
Sky Sports.
"If all goes well I'm hoping the details will be finalised both on his
personal contract and the details between ourselves and Newcastle.
"I'm hoping that will be finalised at the beginning of next week and,
all being well, I'll be able to tell you he's a Fulham player next week.
But the astute boss urged caution until the deal has been completely rubber stamped.
"Until it's completed, it's better to be prudent, but I'm very hopeful we'll have Damien with us."
