Steven Pienaar's future at Everton may be in doubt after the South Africa international reportedly rejected the offer of a new contract at Goodison Park. The 27-year-old, who joined the Toffees initially on a loan deal from
German side
Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of the 2007/08 season
before the move was made permanent for £2million, has attracted the interest of a host of clubs this summer following an impressive campaign last season.
Atletico Madrid,
Fiorentina and Russian champions
Rubin Kazan have all been credited with an interest in the midfield schemer, who playing an instrumental role in helping the Toffees finish 5th in the Premier League as well as reach the FA Cup final.
Pienaar is just one year into a three-year deal with
Everton but such has been his impact in the top-flight, David Moyes has been eager to secure the long-term future of one of his prize assets in much the same we has done with
Tim Howard,
Phil Jagielka and Yoseph Yobo this summer.
But the
Daily Mail is reporting that
Pienaar has rebuffed the club's initial offer and although he admitted last month that he would 'welcome' a new contract from the club, it appears he may have had his head turned by the interest in his services from the continent.
However, Moyes harbouring realistic ambitions of gatecrashing the top-four next season it would appear very unlikely that he would be willing to part with one of his star performers last season regardless if the player has rejected the offer of a new deal or not.
