Collymore: Chelsea have the edge over Man Utd on paper

Outspoken broadcaster and former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore has tipped Chelsea for the title this season, claiming the Blues just have the better 'engine room' players.

Carlo Ancelotti's side trounced Arsenal 3-0 on Sunday it appears that the race for the Premier League title will strictly be between Chelsea and Manchester United, who kept up the pace on their rivals with a 4-1 win at Portsmouth.

But 'Stan the Man' simply cannot look beyond the relative merits of the first-team midfields available to Ancelotti and Sir Alex Ferguson respectively, and has concluded that the Italian trumps the Scotsman in the vast majority of positions.

Acknowledging the fact that it is the United players who have won three successive titles, Collymore still maintains that when considering the here and now, Chelsea's players have the edge more often than not.

The 38-year-old doesn't put forward a definitive Chelsea & Man Utd XI, but chooses Lampard ahead of Carrick, Essien ahead of Fletcher and Joe Cole ahead of Ryan Giggs, while declaring that Scholes and Ballack are too close to call.

"When I saw the champions’ team-sheet I couldn’t help but feel that Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs wouldn’t get a sniff of action regularly for title rivals Chelsea," he wrote in his Daily Mirror column.

"And this is precisely why I think league leaders Chelsea will triumph come May with a more balanced, stronger and more creative midfield than the champions."

With this in mind, ExtraFootie just had to draw up its own best eleven from the Premier League's top two:

Van Der Sar pips Petr Cech between the posts, the Czech custodian just hasn't been the same since his unfortunate head injury.

Jose Bosingwa
at right back is a no brainer, United don't even seem sure of their best choice in that position!

John Terry is another obvious choice, and we've gone for Nemanja Vidic ahead of Ricardo Carvalho and his United team-mate Rio Ferdinand for his toughness and proven class.

Patrice Evra
edges out Ashley Cole at left-back in the hardest choice we had to make

Into midfield and its got to be Michael Essien over Anderson and Lampard over Carrick for his greater consistency and goal threat.

Darren Fletcher is United's sole representative in the midfield, getting the nod over Michael Ballack - testimony to the fact the Scot has become the heartbeat of United's engine room over the past 12 months.

Up front, Didier Drogba and Wayne Rooney are givens, while Ryan Giggs, even at 36 has proved that he can turn games single-handedly: see United's wins against Manchester City, Stoke and Portsmouth this season.

*Formation (4-3-3): Van Der Sar; Bosingwa, Terry, Vidic, Evra; Essien, Fletcher, Lampard; Rooney, Drogba, Giggs

Interesting...

I would tend to agree on the choices made for the Man Utd & Chelsea XI.

Cole could easily replace Evra - but i agree think the Frenchman just shades it - such a massive part of United's attacking play.

Carvalho is decent but you look at Vidic - mainstay in United side that has won three titles on the bounce and appeared in two Champions League finals.

Midfield three - again can't really argue - Ballack hasnt been up to it since he came to England - Mikel is limited and Fletcher has been awesome.

I guess the one position may be Anelka for Giggs considering Le Sulk was top scorer last season, but then again Giggs is defying logic with his performances at 36 - still United's main creative force

Scary!

So 6 United players and 5 Chelsea - id say just about right although I am sure everyone will be different.
