Carlo Ancelotti is hoping to further bolster his already impressive squad with the addition of versatile Livorno midfielder Antonio Candreva, who recently made his debut for the Italian national team.
The 22-year-old is currently on a season-long loan with the Amaranto from parent club Udinese, and has been one of Serie A's top performers in his first season in the big-time, having helped Livorno to promotion last term.
Previously a target for West Ham boss Gianfrano Zola, Candreva is most valued for his ability to play in any position across the midfield, a tough tackler with a great shot, he is also noted for his fine technique and admirable engine.
He has started almost every one of Livorno's Serie A games this season, and his dazzling displays led to a call-up to Marcello Lippi's Azzurri squad, making his debut in the 0-0 draw against the Netherlands earlier this month.
Ancelotti is a huge admirer of his compatriot, who is valued at around £4million, and could land him as a back-up for African Cup of Nations bound Michael Essien and Jon Obi Mikel in the New Year.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the Hammers have reluctantly conceded that they will be priced out of the market for Candreva, who could prove to be a shrewd piece of investment should Ancelotti bring him to Stamford Bridge.
