Chelsea receive Drogba injury boost

Chelsea have been given a huge boost with the news that star striker Didier Drogba is set to return to action at the weekend after a scan on his injured calf revealed no lasting damage.

The Ivory Coast international was stretchered off at Stamford Bridge in the Blue's 3-0 demolition of Spurs on Sunday.

The in-form Drogba was looking for his second goal of the game, and sixth in the league so far, when he went down clutching his calf after a snap shot at Carlo Cudicini's goal.

It was feared the imposing forward had torn his right calf muscle, but Chelsea assistant boss Ray Wilkins revealed the extent of the injury was not as bad as first feared.

"He came off with the most horrendous bout of cramp," Wilkins explained to BBC Sport.

"We thought it was a bit more serious but the scan has revealed there's nothing in there so hopefully he will be okay to take part on Saturday."

Manager Carlo Ancelloti will rest Drogba for Wednesday night's Carling Cup third round tie with QPR as a precautionary measure, but the 31-year-old is expected return to the Blues' starting XI for their match at Wigan on Saturday.

The former Marseille hitman has been in inspired form so far this season scoring five league goals and playing a significant role in bulldozing opposition defences, helping the Blues to an impressive 100 per cent league record.
