Drained Irish stars set to miss out

The Republic of Ireland Premier League stars who took part in the heart-breaking World Cup qualification elimination at the hands of France are set to miss out on their corresponding clubs fixtures this weekend.

Ireland captain Richard Dunne, striker Robbie Keane, and midfielders Liam Lawrence and Glen Whelan are all set to be rested by their respective clubs following their exertions midweek against France.

The Boys in Green were cruelly denied the chance to participate in next summer’s World Cup after William Gallas’ header in extra-time secured Les Bleus a 1-1 draw, and a 2-1 win on aggregate.

The goal came on the back of French captain and striker Thierry Henry’s blatant handball that has sparked much controversy in the aftermath.

The emotionally-draining experience will force the players' various club bosses to leave them out of their respective starting XI's this weekend

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp could also be tempted to rest striker Robbie Keane as he recovers from Ireland's devastating exit.

“Robbie is a sensible, clever guy who understands football - he has a fantastic football brain and knows how he feels,” he told the Daily Mail.

“If he says to me "I feel a bit washed out" then that is good enough, I'll listen to him. If he says "I feel great", then I'll take that on board.

“It's a massive disappointment for him, captain of his country. Hopefully it's not, but it could be his last chance to get to the World Cup Finals. But he'll came back strong, he's a great, bubbly character,”
he added.

Spurs host Wigan at White Hart Lane on Sunday, whilst Stoke City entertain rock-bottom Portsmouth at the Britannia Stadium on the same day. Meanwhile, Aston Villa travel to Burnley.
