Aston Villa are understood to be lining up a move to bring Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas to Villa Park this summer.According to a report in
The Sun, Villa boss Martin O'Neill is ready to offer £10million in a bid to prise the 26-year-old away from White Hart Lane after being alerted to his possible availability as his Spurs counterpart Harry Redknapp attempts to cull his squad.
O'Neill views the box-to-box midfielder as the perfect replacement for Garth Barry who departed for
Manchester City last month and having spent £12million on
Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing last week he is now set to continue his philosophy of buying homegrown talent with a swoop for Jenas.
Nottingham-born Jenas, who joined Spurs in a £9million deal from
Newcastle in 2005, has also been linked with a move to
Inter Milan with the
Nerazzurri coach Jose Mourinho a confirmed admirer of the player.
However, with Jenas thought to be keen to link up with close friends Curtis Davies and Nigel Reo-Coker in the Midlands in would appear that Villa are in pole position with an offer thought to be imminent.
Meanwhile, new Villa recruit Downing has revealed that he has been told by O'Neill that there will be no more big-name departures from Villa Park this summer, appearing to end speculation that
England winger Ashley Young could be set for a big-money move to Spurs or Chelsea.
"The first thing I asked the manager was "Are these players staying? Because I'd like to play with them"," he told the
Daily Mail."His response was that the likes of Ashley Young will not be leaving because he is trying to build a squad."
