Premier League champions Manchester United could be set to enter the race to prise Argentine hitman Sergio 'Kun' Aguero away from Atletico Madrid.
The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from the Vicente Calderon in recent weeks, and reports have since emerged that both Chelsea and Inter Milan are interested in acquiring the star.
The Blues were reportedly ready to offer £40million for Aguero, though the price-tag is allegedly set at £55million, and it is expected that the two sides will struggle to come to an agreement in January.
Aguero has said he is open to the idea of leaving the Spanish capital, though he does not expect to move on until the end of the current campaign, by which time Carlo Ancelotti's side could be under a transfer embargo.
Jose Mourinho is a known admirer of Aguero's talents but would also find it tough to match Los Colchoneros' astronomical asking price, though he does have the bargaining tool of Atletico target Ricardo Quaresma to offer in exchange.
Should neither of their rivals be able to sign the player, The Daily Mail are reporting that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to step in and add 'Kun' to his ranks.
The article suggests that Fergie is looking to sign Aguero along with Valencia hotshot David Villa in the hope that he can build his team around a three pronged attack of Aguero, Villa and Wayne Rooney come the summer.
There are, however, still question marks as to United's financial strength at the moment, with the club recently pulling out of a deal to sign Partizan Belgrade midfielder Adam Ljajic as well as reportedly turning down the opportunity to sign long term target Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich for £60million.
