Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan has moved to quell talk that he is the heir apparent to Cristiano Ronaldo by insisting that he wishes to carve out his own legacy at Old Trafford.
Obertan, 20, joined the Premier League champions from Bordeaux in a £3million deal during the summer and was handed his first UEFA Champions League start in United's shock 1-0 defeat to Besiktas on Wednesday evening.
The winger's pace, trickery and penchant for a step-over has already seen him being compared to former United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who spent six years with the Red Devils prior to his world record £80million switch to Real Madrid.
However, Obertan is keen to avoid comparisons with the FIFA World Player of the Year, who in 2009 slammed home 26 goals in all competitions as Sir Alex Ferguson's men stormed to a third consecutive league crown and finished runners-up in the UEFA Champions League.
"I am not Ronaldo's successor," the France Under-21 star told The Independent.
"For now there is no comparison, I am just trying to be Gabriel Obertan. I have only been here for six months and I cannot do what he did in that time.
"I want to do more. I have not scored yet and I have not made an assist.
"I have put in some good performances but they have only been short appearances when I came on as a substitute.
"I want to do more than that and I think I could. That is what I am wishing for. If I get another chance, I know I will take it," he added.
Obertan may get his chance to do more when United travel to Fratton Park to take on Portsmouth in a match which sees Ferguson go head-to-head with Avram Grant for the first time since the 2008 UEFA Champions League final in Moscow.
